Erbil's citadel rises from a mound built up over at least six thousand years of continuous settlement. Today the capital of the Kurdistan Region is a relaxed, modern city with gardens, cafés and one of the best bazaars in Iraq.
From here, the mountains of Kurdistan — Shaqlawa, Rawanduz and the Hamilton Road — are a short drive away.
