The Iraqi Maqam
Music
A centuries-old classical vocal tradition, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Performed by a singer with the chalghi ensemble — santur, joza, and percussion — the maqam draws on classical Arabic poetry and colloquial verse. Baghdad's teahouses were its traditional stage.
